Sir John Jenkins is currently Executive Director for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Middle East, based in Bahrain. Until the end of January 2015 he was British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Before that he was Special Representative to the Libyan National Transitional Council and later British Ambassador to Libya (2011), British Ambassador to Iraq (2009-11), FCO Director for the Middle East and North Africa (2007-9), British Ambassador to Syria (2006-7), British Consul-General in Jerusalem (2003-6) and British Ambassador to Burma (1999-2002). He also served in British Missions in Kuwait, Malaysia and the UAE. Sir John Jenkins studied Arabic and Burmese at SOAS, University of London. Before joining the FCO in 1980 he studied at the University of Cambridge (BA 1977 – Double First – and PhD 1980). His current research/policy interests are Political Islamism, the GCC, Iraq, Libya and the Israel-Arab issue. His wife, Nancy, works as a High School Principal in Riyadh.
