Yaalon has served in a wide range of positions in the IDF, including commander of the paratroop reconnaissance unit, commander of battalion 890, commander of Sayeret Matkal, commander of the regular army paratroop division, commander of Judea and Samaria Division, commander of an armored reserve unit, and Tze’elim training base commander. In 1995, he was appointed the head of Military Intelligence where he served for three years. In 1998, he was appointed OC Central Command, and two years later to Deputy Chief of General Staff. In July 2002, he was appointed the 17th Chief of General Staff of the IDF. In June 2005, he completed his service as Chief of General Staff. In November 2008, Minister Yaalon joined the Likud party and was appointed Minister for Strategic Affairs, and Deputy Prime Minister. During this term, Minister Yaalon was a member of the diplomatic-security cabinet. Minister Yaalon was Israel's Defense Minister since 2013.
